His Honda Civic was headed north on the highway when it hit a pothole, hydroplaned into the center median and overturned near Grove Street around 9 a.m., Waldwick Police Lt. Thomas Dowling said.
The driver got out on his own before being taken to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, Dowling said.
The crash backed up the highway's northbound side and created southbound rubbernecking.
Waldwick police, firefighters and Volunteer Ambulance Corps members responded.
Boyd A. Loving took the photos and contributed to this report.
